The Gastroenterology (GI) Technician, under direct supervision of an RN, interacts with patients pre and post procedure, prepares the room and the equipment for procedures, provides support to physicians and nurses during the procedure, collects and handle specimens, and sterilizes equipment
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The GI Tech must know how to independently set up the room and equipment for needed procedures such as EGDs, colonoscopies, and ERCPs. Implements the individual patient plan of care under the direction of the RN. Assists physicians with patient care. Maintains a clean and organized environment.
The Tech must have an understanding of par level of needed supplies required to perform endoscopic procedures as well as have a working knowledge of equipment and supplies and demonstrate the competency to assist the physician during the procedure.
The Tech prepares patient charts for pre-calls, post-calls, specimen review and patient correspondence and helps to care for the patient and may be responsible for collecting patient biopsies and specimens and keeping the field sterile. May assists with preparing, collecting, and labeling specimens for biopsy, cytology, cultures, etc.
The Tech must know how to clean and sterilize all gastroenterology equipment according to various agency standards and manufacturer's recommendations, and document the processes for all equipment sterilization/disinfection and accurate record keeping.
Observes and immediately reports unusual symptoms, changes in condition and/or injuries to the patient's nurse.
Maintains safe and rapid room turnaround time and quality safety and infection control standards. Transports patients to and from procedure rooms. Uses appropriate body alignment and safety measures for patients and self while transferring and repositioning
Helps to identify hazards and unsafe conditions within the department. Reports any noted malfunctions of a scope, sterilizer, or equipment promptly to appropriate persons to timely initiate the repair process.

Education and/or Experience
HS Diploma, or equivalent, is required.
Preferred: Certificate or degree in surgical technology, sterile processing, or a medical assistant program.
Preferred: 1 year experience working in a Gastroenterology Center or other Procedural Department, as a Surgical Technologist or as a Sterile Processing Technician.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
